Sometimes a Light Surprises    TMH #253

The lyricist, William Cowper (pronounced Cooper) was an English poet and Anglican hymn writer, who is thought to have changed the direction of 18th-century ‘nature poetry’ by writing of everyday life and scenes of the countryside. Cowper struggled with deep depression and used his poetry to help ease it. Words from this poem first appeared in print in 1779 and are currently in print in 401 hymnals using varying tunes.

Siyahamba    VT #793

This song was first transcribed by Andries van Tonder in 1952, but could be a much older Zulu folk song. Anders Nyberg, the arranger of the piece we have in our hymnal, heard and recorded "Siyahamba" at a girls' school in Natal South Africa.

In 1984, Nyberg arranged "Siyahamba" for a four-voice setting and published it for the first time.
